Why your child’s economics grade is stuck: the three diagnostic categories
When an A-Level Economics grade stops moving, the cause is almost always one of three things, and I sort every student into one of them before I teach a single model. I call them the three diagnostic categories: knowledge gaps, application failures, and exam technique. They look identical on a report card — a B, a C, “needs to work harder” — but they need completely different lessons, and giving a student the wrong one wastes months. Getting the category right first is why my students scored 18 A/A* grades in the official 2024/2025 A-Level Economics exams, with an average improvement of two grades, and why some move that far in weeks rather than in a year.
Diagnosis comes before treatment
The hallmark of a professional is that, like a medical doctor, they diagnose the specific problem in front of them and prescribe the best-practice solution to that problem. Nobody wants a doctor who reaches for the same prescription pad whatever walks through the door. Yet that is close to what happens to stuck economics students: more content, more past papers, more hours — the same treatment, harder.
“My child is stuck at a C” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Two students can be stuck at a C for reasons so different that the right lesson for one is wasted time for the other. So the first thing I do with a new student is not teach; it is work out which of the three categories I am looking at — within the first lesson, not the first term.
The three categories
1. Knowledge gaps
The student does not yet have the economics
Something on the specification was never taught properly, was covered while they were unwell, or went so fast it never landed. The tell is that the answer is not wrong so much as thin: a diagram missing, a definition approximated, a whole evaluation angle absent because nobody showed them it existed.
Evaluation is the biggest single instance. It carries around 40% of the marks on essay questions, and in my experience it is covered well by neither the Edexcel textbook nor the specification — plenty of students I meet have never been taught it systematically at all. That is a gap, not a character flaw, and gaps are the most straightforward of the three to fix: teach the thing properly, with the diagram, then consolidate it.
2. Application failures
The student has the economics but cannot get it onto the right question
This is the one parents almost never guess, and it is far more common than they expect. The student knows the content — sometimes knows it well — but cannot decipher what a past-paper question is actually asking, cannot link it back to the right bit of the specification, and so writes a fluent, hard-working answer about the wrong thing.
The cost is non-linear. An irrelevant answer does not score a bit less; it can score close to nothing, and burns exam time doing it. A B-grade student who blanks on the topic name and writes about something adjacent gets zero on that question and a D overall. This category also produces the fastest turnarounds I see: the knowledge is already in the room, just aimed at the wrong target.
3. Exam technique
The student has the economics and the right topic, but loses marks on the mechanics
They know it, they aimed it correctly, and they still drop marks: the answer is not structured the way the mark scheme rewards, the diagram is drawn but never explained, the chain of reasoning stops two links short, the judgement is never actually made.
In my experience this is the rarest of the three as the primary problem, though very often a secondary one behind the first two. It is fixed by putting the student’s own work next to the official Edexcel or AQA mark scheme and showing them, line by line, where the marks are awarded — far more credible to a sceptical seventeen-year-old than me asserting it.
One worked diagnosis
Here is the method in miniature. A student sends me a 25-marker on government intervention. I am not reading it for a mark — I am reading it to place it in a category. Take one sentence:

“The government could fix congestion by improving the traffic light system so cars spend less time queuing.”
That sentence gets three different verdicts depending on what else is on the page.
If the essay shows no working knowledge of externalities — no marginal social cost, no divergence, no sense that congestion is a negative externality at all — this is a knowledge gap. They are reaching for common sense because the economics was never taught. Cure: teach the externalities model properly, with the diagram.
If they can define externalities perfectly, have the diagram elsewhere in their folder, and wrote competently about taxation and regulation on another question — this is an application failure. They own the tools; they did not recognise that “congestion” is the specification’s negative externality in costume, so they never reached for them. Cure: question-to-topic mapping, and it is fast.
If the essay goes on to cover taxation and regulation properly but opened with the traffic lights, hedged the judgement and never explained its diagram — the diagnosis is exam technique. The economics arrived; the marks leaked out through structure. Cure: their work against the mark scheme, side by side.
I have had exactly this: a boarding-school student whose congestion essay scored zero. Once I showed him, repeatedly, each place he drifted off topic, his eyes opened up. He said, oh, wow, that makes sense. And then he simply stopped doing it.
Why the category changes what the lesson does
This is the practical payoff, and the reason I do not sell “more economics lessons”. Each category gets a different hour.

This is why I insist on seeing the student’s actual work — essays, mocks, the whole folder. A grade tells you there is a problem; only the work tells you which problem.
What you can look for at home
You do not need to be an economist to make a first pass. One signal per category:
- Knowledge gap — your child cannot explain a topic out loud in plain English, or goes quiet when asked what the diagram shows. Ask them to teach it to you for two minutes; gaps surface at once.
- Application failure — school feedback says the answer “lacked relevance”, and your child is baffled because they revised hard. Effort high, marks low, no obvious reason: that is the signature.
- Exam technique — the content is all there when you read the essay, but the marks are not. Look for a diagram with no explanation underneath it, and a conclusion that never commits.
Students are frequently in more than one category at once. What matters is which is doing the most damage right now, because that is where the next ten hours should go.
Where the method came from
Not from a teacher-training course. It came from my own finals at Oxford, where I spent much of my revision categorising question types and learned to open every answer by naming what kind of problem it was before solving it — a fair part of why I came out with three prizes in economics and the best mark in my year in Game Theory. The three diagnostic categories are that same discipline pointed at students rather than at questions.
Try it yourself
Take the last economics essay your child got back and ignore the mark. Read it once asking only: is the economics missing, present but aimed at the wrong topic, or correctly aimed but leaking marks on structure, diagrams and judgement?
Whichever it is, that is where the next block of work should go — and it probably is not “more past papers”. Most students are further along than their grade suggests. They are just being treated for the wrong condition.
